30 years of filming becomes unique documentary

Swedish filmmaker Staffan Hildebrand has spent three decades filming and documenting the face of HIV and AIDS. Now he’s turned to Kickstarter to ask for help funding the pre-production of the film.

In order to gain interest from the most popular channels and largest distributers, Hildebrand and Storyfire have now launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the pre-production of Passing the Torch. Under the hashtag #PassingtheTorchFilm, they hope to raise awareness about the still ongoing battle against HIV and AIDS.

– The world has changed dramatically in the last few years. The rise of nationalism, populism and intolerance threatens years of progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS. That’s the reason why I want to make the documentary, “Passing the Torch”, says Hildebrand.

Together with South African activist and journalist Mary-Jane Matsolo, he will travel to different parts of the world to explore the situation of today, historical lessons of the past and examine future threats and the political factors that govern the resources needed to fight on.

– This is a battle where the response to this disease in recent years has lost ground. In order to influence politicians and other leaders, a new, third wave of activism is needed to put HIV and AIDS back onto the worlds agenda, Hildebrand says.

The Swedish filmmaker, who previously has directed documentaries for the International AIDS Conference, will work together with the media production company Storyfire. Hildebrand will also collaborate with the Face of Aids archive owned by the medical university Karolinska Institute, most known for awarding the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
