Jamaica: Holness willing to appoint gay ministers

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, who has told the international community to be more patient with Jamaica as it develops a greater level of tolerance for homosexuality, indicated that he would have no problem appointing a homosexual to his Cabinet.

The country’s first prime minister born post-independence further indicated that even some local churches are now warming up the idea of embracing homosexuals.

“The culture is evolving; the people are evolving. Even in the church which 10 years ago had a unified position [against homosexuality]; the church in Jamaica now has multiple positions on the issue. I think Jamaica ought to be given space to find its own solution to the problem,” he said in response to a question posed when he met members of the Jamaican diaspora in Brussels yesterday, April 15.
