Taiwan is poised to become the first place in Asia to grant same-sex couples the right to marry after the island's top court ruled on May 24 that the current ban on homosexual union is unconstitutional.

After the ruling, Secretary-General Lu Tai-lang of Taiwan's Judicial Yuan told reporters, "Relevant agencies should amend laws or make new ones within the next two years starting from today."

The Judicial Yuan oversees the constitutional court, which was responsible for the ruling. The court demands Taiwanese lawmakers amend laws or pass a new bill within the next two years to make homosexual unions possible. If that does not occur, the court says same-sex couples should be allowed to register their marriage with local authorities under the current legal framework. Read more via NIKKEI Asian Review
